ASER Pakistan Data Explorer

Learning levels and enrolment from the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) Pakistan, the citizen-led household survey that tests children aged 5–16 at home in reading and arithmetic. Every number is read from a national report table, and the page it came from is shown with it. This is an independent tool, not an ITA/ASER Pakistan product.

Province trends at a glance

Class 5 children who can read a Class 2 story, read English sentences, and do 2-digit division, and the share of children aged 6–16 out of school. Hollow dots are 2025 (rural and urban combined, except AJK and GB). Gaps mean no comparable figure. Click a panel to explore that province below.

Reading this data

  • ASER tests every child aged 5–16 in a sampled household with the same simple tools, set at Class 2 level (Urdu, Sindhi or Pashto, English, arithmetic). "Class 5 can read a story" means a Class 5 child read a Class 2 level story.
  • Shares are of children enrolled in that class, whatever school they attend. Out-of-school shares are of all children in the age band.
  • "At least" adds up the chosen level and every level above it.
  • Each round is a different sample of rural districts, so a trend compares cohorts, not the same children.
  • Provinces are compared with each other; Pakistan is shown as the national anchor. Ranks describe, they don't explain.

Comparability flags

  • 2025The 2025 report gives rural and urban children combined for Pakistan, Punjab, Sindh, KP, Balochistan and ICT; only AJK and GB are rural only. 2025 is plotted as a separate hollow point and is not joined to the rural series. Rural-only out-of-school figures from the 2025 area panel are given where printed.
  • Copy errorThe 2025 AJK and GB English and arithmetic tables are identical cell for cell in the report. Both are withheld.
  • SumSix 2021 rows (four Punjab arithmetic classes, Sindh arithmetic Class 4, Balochistan English Class 9) are printed with values that do not add to 100. Their "at least" figures are withheld; the raw rows are kept in the table.
  • 2012The 2012 top arithmetic level is labelled division with 3 digits; from 2013 it is 2-digit division.
  • FATAFrom 2018 the former FATA is reported as "KP newly merged districts". It has no separate section after 2019, and ICT has none in 2023.
  • Arithmetic adds a 100–200 rung from 2019 and 3-digit subtraction from 2021. "At least subtraction" counts every rung from 2-digit subtraction upward, so it is comparable across rounds.
